Our church was established in 1869 by
Sheldon Jackson, sometimes known as the Johnny Appleseed of Presbyterian
Churches.

Read about him in
Wikapedia at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sheldon_Jackson
The following is an excerpt from the history of our church
prepared by Mrs. Imogene Bastron for our 1969 centennial:
We the undersigned members of churches desiring a Presbyterian Church in
Red Oak Junction, Iowa, do earnestly request the Reverend Sheldon Jackson,
Superintendent of Presbyterian Missions for
Central and Western Iowa, Nebraska, Dakota, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, and
Colorado, to organize us into a Presbyterian Church at his earliest
convenience.
In compliance with the above petition the
Reverend Sheldon Jackson, one of the exciting and courageous men on the
American frontier, came to Red Oak Junction, Iowa on Sunday, June 13th, 1869. In
the Methodist Church, which was filled to capacity, he preached from
Deuteronomy 2:31 and then he officiated at the procedure of the organization of
the Presbyterian Church…up to the
election of Ruling Elders. The election was deferred for the purpose of giving
all prospective members a vote.
Sometime in July 1869 Red Oak Junction was
incorporated as a town. Counting every building in view, there were 50
structures on the town site. It was said that this new town did not really
deserve the title; nevertheless, second only to Deadwood, it was known
as the toughest town in the West.
